The Risks of Light Exposure and the Need for Darkness

Light is an invisible enemy of wine, capable of altering flavor and aroma long before the bottle is opened. Ultraviolet (UV) rays, whether from natural sunlight or artificial lighting, initiate chemical reactions within the wine, breaking down delicate compounds and leading to what is known as “light-strike.” This condition results in unpleasant aromas and a noticeable loss of freshness.

“Light strike can dull all those bright fruit flavours in your wine and, at worst, introduce a series of unpleasant smells, such as rotten cabbage or eggs, as well as wet wool. Broadly speaking, it can occur if UV rays or ‘blue’ light react with components of the wine, creating off-smelling sulphur compounds.” — Decanter (Ask Decanter, quoting Dr. Akshay Baboo, Plumpton College)

Clear and lightly tinted bottles are particularly vulnerable, but even dark glass cannot provide complete protection. That is why professional storage facilities maintain low-light or completely dark environments. By eliminating UV exposure, they preserve the wine’s integrity, ensuring its bouquet, color, and taste remain unchanged until the moment of enjoyment.
